SRINAGAR: Two persons have been detained in connection with an alleged obscene act near the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan in Reasi district after a video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting police to register a case and launch an investigation.
According to Reasi Police, the incident took place on July 17 near the Bhawan market area, where four individuals—two boys and two girls—allegedly engaged in an obscene and inappropriate act. Police said the incident disrupted the smooth conduct of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage and hurt the religious sentiments of devotees.
A video of the incident later surfaced on social media and quickly went viral, drawing widespread public attention and prompting police action.
Police Station Bhawan registered FIR No. 31/2026 under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to acts affecting religious sentiments, and constituted special teams to identify and trace those involved.
During the investigation, police detained two of the accused. One of them was identified as Pritam Singh, son of Karnail Singh, a resident of Talwara in Reasi district.
The second accused is a juvenile and has been dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act. After completing the required legal formalities, the juvenile was handed over to his family, police said.
Police said efforts are continuing to trace the remaining two accused allegedly involved in the incident.
Reasi Police said it remains committed to maintaining public order, preserving the sanctity of religious places and ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for pilgrims visiting the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. It warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found indulging in activities that disturb public peace or hurt the religious sentiments of devotees.
