SRINAGAR: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk remains in stable condition but continues to require round-the-clock medical supervision due to the physiological effects of his prolonged hunger strike, according to doctors at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital.
In a medical bulletin issued on Sunday evening, the hospital said Wangchuk’s vital signs—including blood pressure, pulse rate and oxygen saturation—are stable, while his blood parameters have shown only marginal improvement and require close observation.
The bulletin said a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, along with experts from AIIMS New Delhi, is overseeing his treatment.
“Sonam Wangchuk is receiving the required medical care at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital. While his vital parameters are stable, his blood investigations need continuous monitoring. Sustained medical intervention and round-the-clock clinical supervision remain essential to promptly identify and manage any potential complications,” the hospital said.
Earlier in the day, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Charu Bamba told reporters that Wangchuk remained fully alert, conscious and oriented despite fasting for several days. However, she noted that some of his laboratory parameters were slightly outside the normal range and further investigations were being carried out.
Doctors said his weakened condition, coupled with the ongoing fast, necessitates continuous monitoring and specialised medical care.
The health update came hours after Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, approached the Delhi High Court seeking his transfer to a private hospital. The petition alleged that the family had not been provided complete medical information and raised concerns over his treatment at the government-run facility.
Hospital authorities, however, dismissed the allegations, maintaining that Wangchuk is being treated strictly in accordance with established medical protocols. They said his family has been regularly informed about his condition and provided with medical summaries and investigation reports.
The hospital also reiterated that Wangchuk’s treatment is being supervised by a multidisciplinary team, including specialists from AIIMS, to ensure comprehensive medical care as doctors continue to closely monitor his condition.
