SRINAGAR: Kashmir police have arrested two people and recovered a huge quantity of prescription drugs on their instance at Sangam in south Kashmir Islamabad district, a poliuce spokesman quoted SSP Zubair Ahmad Khan saying.

Following a tip off about the transportation of drugs, Khan has said, a police party headed by DO Police Post Sangam Mohammad Ashraf under the supervision of SDPO Bijbehara Tanveer Ahmad laid a Naka at Sangam bridge. Police party intercepted the suspected vehicle bearing registration number JK05/6704  at Sangam Bridge. On checking of the vehicle police recovered 39 boxes consisting of 4680 bottles of Codeine Phosphate, he has said.

SSP said the two were driver and conductor of the vehicle and were immediately arrested. He identified them as identified as Majid Abaas Wani son of  Ghulam Mohammad Wani a resident of  Rakhi Shilwet Tehsil  Sumbal and Tawfeeq  Ahmad Parray son of Abdul Salam Parray  a resident of Wangipor Sumbal.

A case FIR 21/2017 under section 8/21 NDPS Act has been registered against them and further investigation has been taken up, the spokesman quoted him saying.

The police offered no details about whether the arrested duo owned the consignment or were just the carriers. It also was silent about the arrests, if any, of those receiving it in south Kashmir.
