SRINAGAR: Two civilians were killed and one was injured in shelling from across the Line of Control in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.

Official sources said that two civilians identified as Farooq Ahmad Mir and Farooqa Begum of Balakote were killed and one civilian identified as Nazir Ahmad of Kamalkote was injured in the shelling.

The injured civilian has been hospitalized, they said.

Three houses were also damaged in the shelling, said a local resident.

A police officer said that Pakistan army initiated the “unprovoked ceasefire” violation by firing mortar shells and small arms along the LoC in Uri.

The troops manning the fence responded strongly which resulted in a heavy exchange of cross-LoC shelling in these areas, he said.
