The decision was taken following discussions between Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, and the Divisional Commissioner of the Union Territory of Ladakh regarding traffic arrangements on the Srinagar-Kargil highway.

During the deliberations, the Divisional Commissioner of Ladakh also coordinated with the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir to finalise the traffic modalities.

Officials said that, from May 14, 2026, two-way vehicular movement will be allowed between Minamarg and Sonamarg.

The CEC also held discussions with the Deputy Commissioner of Drass to ensure effective coordination and smooth implementation on the ground.

The move is expected to bring major relief to passengers, traders, transporters and daily commuters travelling along the strategic highway.
