Handwara Killings

Two youth were shot dead in North Kashmir’s Handwara town Tuesday afternoon. The two were protesting against an alleged molestation attempt by a soldier.

Reports reaching from Handwara said a couple of youth saw a soldier and two young ladies around a washroom in the main Chowk that triggered the crisis.

As the news of “molestation” spread around, hundreds of people joined and resorted to stone pelting on the main bunkers that is located in the main Chowk.

The main Chowk bunker in Handwara is manned by the armed forces for almost three decades now. It was on this mob which was fired upon. Though police and army was present when the angry mob resorted to attack on the bunkers, it was not immediately known which force resorted to firing.

Initial reports said that at least two persons were killed in the incident. One person was killed on the spot. Another was evacuated in a grave situation out of town but he breathed his last in the town periphery and was taken back. There are various people injured and most of them have been evacuated to the local hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Iqbal, 21, and Naeem Qadir Bhat 22.

After the twin killings, thousands of residents came out of their homes and are on the streets. The bunker, unofficial reports said, was demolished by the mob and the police are engaged in battling with the angry residents.

Reports said police are making efforts to restore order.

Both the slain youth were students.
