An under-trial has escaped from a Mendhar court in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Tahir Hussain Shah was produced in the Mendhar Court Friday afternoon for a hearing in a burglary case, Deputy SP Shahid, SDPO Mendhar said.

He said soon after hearing, he “gave a slip” to the police and managed to escape. “Tahir was involved in a number of cases including narcotics. He had been lodged in district Jail Poonch earlier too, and a number of FIRs stand registered against him.”

Police party escorting him had to bite dust as Tahir deserted the scene like anything. “We have launched a manhunt to apprehend him while teams have been dispatched to conduct raids in various hideouts,” said a police officer. Meanwhile on the directions of learned Judge of Mendhar Court a fresh FIR vide No. 7/2016 has been lodged against the absconder.
