Union Minister for Human Resources Development (HRD), Pallamraju has said that the Ministry will relax the eligibility criteria under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme to cover maximum number of students from J&K.

As per a local news agency, KNS, this assurance was given by him to MP G N Ratanpuri in a meeting this evening. The meeting was attended by the MoS HRD, Shashi Tharoor, Secretary GOI, Ministry of Education and many senior officers of the HRD Ministry.

G N Ratanpuri had discussed the problem of delay in disbursement of scholarships in one on one meetings with the Minister for HRD, officers of the Ministry and in the Parliament.

He has said in the meeting that eligibility criteria should be relaxed to cover all those who have applied and are studying in different educational institutions in various parts of the country. He informed the ministers that the delay has created financial, social and psychological problems for the students and their families and is developing into a big issue. He has also termed the delay as ‘atrocious and unacceptable’ and demanded immediate verification to ensure the promised assistance to all bonafide students to restore the credibility of the Scholarship Scheme.

The MP is scheduled to discuss the matter again tomorrow with the Secretary and other senior officers to facilitate the disbursement of scholarship to 5000 Kashmiri students as part of the Rs 1200 crore Scholarship Scheme.
