The unionist politicians of Jammu and Kashmir led by Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed paid floral tributes to 1931 Martyrs at Naqshbad Sahib Martyrs’ graveyard early Monday. However, ruling coalition partner, Hindu nationalist BJP skipped the function.

Accompanied by his senior members of cabinet, including Muhammad Altaf Bukhari, Naeem Akhtar, Ab Rehman Veeri, Syed Basharat Bukhari, Muhammad Ashraf Mir and MLC Khurshid Alam, CM Mufti Sayeed paid floral tributes to martyrs amid tight security badobast.

After Sayeed left, Omar along with other leaders of opposition National Conference – Ali Mohammad Sagar and Nasir Aslam Wani – reached the Martyrs’ Graveyard and paid floral tributes. Congress’s Mir followed the suit.

Twenty one persons were martyred by Dogra forces outside Central Jail Srinagar this day on 1931 when innocent Kashmiris demanded an open trial of Abdul Qadeer Khan.

Since then, every Kashmir remembers the martyrs while after 1947, the J&K government officially declared it Martyrs Day while state observes holiday.

Breaking from the traditional hartal politics, Hurriyat leaders across ideological divide, this summer, called for a rally from Jamia Masjid to Martyrs Graveyard against any Hartal call. However, all major separatists were detained.
