SRINAGAR: Unknown gunmen on Monday looted six lakh rupees from a vehicle carrying five J&K Bank employees in Shopian. The incident took place at cross-way Kapran.

Reports said that a JK Bank manager, heading the Kapran branch, was travelling in his private swift car JK18-8375 along with the four other bank employees from Kulgam towards their branch when a group of gunmen intercepted them midway. They stopped the vehicle, beat the employees and took away the cash they were carrying, reports added.

The cash was being moved towards the Kapran branch, reports said.

The employees also sustained injuries and were later shifted to the district hospital for treatment.

Police said they have registered a case and started investigations in the case.

In the last more than one year, the area has been witnessing a surprising increase in the incidence of attacks on the banks. Though police said they had solved certain cases, but the incidents have remained uninterrupted.

“Two of the employees are seriously injured because they have been beaten ruthlessly with the gun butts,” an official of the bank said. “Bank employees in the periphery take risks to keep the business going.”
