A historical Jamia Masjid in Bijhama, Uri was gutted Tuesday morning, and a nearby residential house was partially damaged.

Locals said that the blaze erupted in the second storey of the Masjid at 11:30 am and then instantly engulfed it.

“The fire erupted due to Hamam in the Masjid,” locals said, adding that due to wooden ceiling and panelling it burnt fast.

The witnesses said that Darasgah and a government library were also gutted in the fire.

Locals said the Jamia Masjid was constructed in year 1800 by Raja Sultan Khathi.

Locals said that damage could have been minimised had the fire service brigade arrived in time.

“The fire tenders came 3 hours late, and the blaze was uncontrollable by then,” the locals said.

The house which has been partially damaged in the fire belonged to Mohammad Maqbool Lone. (KNS)
