SRINAGAR: United States forces began fresh military strikes against targets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said, citing recent attempted attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and American troops deployed in the region.
CENTCOM said the strikes began at 12 p.m. Eastern Time and were directed at IRGC targets inside Iran.
The US military said the operation followed what it described as attempted IRGC attacks against commercial vessels navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
CENTCOM also cited recent attempted attacks by Iranian forces against US service members deployed across the region as a reason for the latest military action.
Details about the locations targeted, the scale of the strikes and any casualties or damage were not immediately available.
