Following the call of incarcerated All Parties Hurriyat Conference (g) chairperson, Syed Ali Geelani, for protests against the Village Defence Committee (VDC), a protest demonstration was held at uptown Hyderpora post congregational Friday prayers today.

Reports and eye witnesses said that deputy of Hurriyat octogenarian Geelani and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Secretary General, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, led the protest demonstration outside Hyderpora Jamia Masjid.

VDCs have come under severe criticism for their recent actions and demand for their disbanding has gone shriller. Three persons including a minor were killed when two VDC members opened fire in Rajouri a fort night ago.

Separatists across ideological divide and some ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ministers also demanded their rollback, however, BJP led by Dy CM Dr Nirmal Singh, in a press conference in Jammu, supported VDCs.

Addressing the protestors, Hurriyat patriarch Sehrai castigated authorities for their “support” to “VDC terrorists”. “It is because of the state support to these terrorists that such innocent killings take place,” Sehrai, according to witnesses said.

Hitting hard at PDP led coalition government, Sehrai said, “we shall not sit silent over the terrorist activities of VDC goons till they are disbanded.”

Asking people to remain steadfast in their “fight for freedom”, Sehrai asked Hurriyat leadership to “introspect”. “Leaders need to see inwards as what and where went wrong. We have a legacy of seven lakh martyrs,” he said.

Sehrai, who was flanked by other TeH leaders including Imtiyaz Hyder and Zafar Habib, asserted people, “you too should remain vigilant about your true leadership and we shall see the dawn of freedom from occupation soon, Insha Allah.”
