Uri

The residents of Garkote and Kandikalar villages in Uri town of Baramulla district have alleged that Garkote-Kandikalar road has been taken by encroachers. The road was constructed under PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojna).

Violating the norms, at several places along the road, only 8-10 feet width of road has been macadamised as against the protocol of PMGSY that suggests the road should be 18 feet wide.

Locals allege that, even after receiving compensation for the land that would come under the construction of road, some people have refused to have their lands utilised for this purpose. “They won’t do it without official backing,” said a local resident.

While taking to Kashmir Life, Tehsildar Uri, Jaffer Hussain said, “We have demarked the places along the road that encroachers have occupied. I have given them one week to vacate, failing which we will forcible make vacate them and get the road widening done.”
