‘Save Rafiabad Movement’ ((SRM) spearheading the agitation in favour of granting tehsil status to Watergam in North Kashmir, Monday staged a protest in favour of their demand and threatened to start a massive agitation against the government in case Watergam town is not granted tehsil status.

Scores of residents from North Kashmir’s Rafiabad town staged a protest in Press Enclave Srinagar on Monday and argued that despite centrally located Watergam town has been ignored by the government and Cabinet Sub Committee formed to seek suggestions from the people about the creation of different administrative units in Jammu and Kashmir has not taken the people of Watergam on board.

Patron, SRM, Haji Ghulam Hasan Lone told CNS that the creation and establishment of a new Tehsil headquarter in the Rafiabad Block must be at a location which is Central, suitable and technically feasible. He said that Watergam deserves Tehsil status as it is not only centrally located but houses different government offices.

The protestors said that Watergam meets all the pre-requisites and it is an ideal location with a fully established infrastructure and functional Municipality since 2008. “Some vested interest politicians want to deprive Watergam from getting Tehsil status which is unacceptable to us,” one of the protestors said adding that SRM will launch a massive agitation if tehsil status is not granted to Watergam.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people in South Kashmir’s Awantipora town came on roads demanding district status. Protestors said that they will intensify their agitation with respect to their demand.
