The arrest was made during the intervening night after police established a checkpoint at Chatabal in Kulgam and intercepted a suspect during routine checking.

The accused has been identified as Rakib Ahmad Khan, son of Mofjal Khan and a resident of Chandbita, West Bengal.

During the search, police recovered approximately 1 kilogram and 887 grams of suspected ganja from his possession. An electronic weighing machine was also seized during the operation.

The seizure has brought an inter-state dimension to the case, as the accused is a resident of West Bengal and was apprehended in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Police have registered a case under FIR No. 111/2026 under Sections 8 and 20 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Kulgam and initiated further investigation.

Officials said investigators are examining the source and intended destination of the recovered substance and whether the accused was operating independently or as part of a wider network.

Further investigation is underway. [KNT]
