As the world observes Human Rights Day Wednesday authorities placed Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest to prevent him from attending a seminar on human rights.
Human Rights Day is observed on December 10 every year. More than eight thousand people have been disappeared in custody in last three decades in Kashmir. Moreover, almost 70,000 people mostly civilians lost their lives during the period.
Almost all the frontline separatist leadership is undergoing detention on the World Human Rights Day. Separatist leaders used to organize different programmes on the eve of this day which were attended by the victims of human rights abuses especially kith and kin of disappeared persons.
Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani has been detained in his residence since more than two months while as Shabir Shah, head of third faction of Hurriyat Conference is undergoing detention in district jail Kupwara. Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Moulana Mohammad Abdullah Tari and Ayaz Akbar are among those separatists who have been detained in the same jail since the election process started in J&K.
Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik is also among the separatist leaders who were arrested and detained much before the start of election process. Malik is undergoing detention in district jail Islamabad.
According to separatists, more than fifteen hundred people have been arrested since last two months.
