During last three years Traffic Police Department has realized more than Rs two Crores from compounding of Challans for wrong parking in Jammu and Kashmir.

This was stated by Minister In-Charge Home Department, government of Jammu and Kashmir in State Assembly on Monday. He was replying to a query raised by MLC Gargi Blowria.

“During the last three years (2013-2015), an amount of Rs 2,33,34,709/- has been realized from compounding of challans for wrong parking,” the minister informed the house.

For wrong parking a violator has to pay Rs 600 as towing charges, out of which Rs 358/- is deposited in Government Treasury. The remaining amount of Rs 242/- is paid to owner of the crane.

An amount of Rs 1, 45,874,039/- has been paid to the owners of the cranes from December 2011 to 2015, the reply revealed. These cranes are property of private owners which are hired by traffic department after tendering.

The minister said, “right now, there are no budgetary provisions for purchase of cranes for the Police Department.”

The minister added that at present there are eight private cranes operational in twin cities of Srinagar and Jammu city for lifting of wrongly parked vehicles. “These cranes are hired for the period of 11 months with a provision of further extension.”

Traffic Department of Jammu and Kashmir Police hires 207/407 towing vehicles indicated as cranes “for lifting of light motor vehicles and not for lifting heavy vehicles”.
