SRINAGAR

At least three school children and a driver was injured when agitated youth pelted stones on an SRTC bus carrying students from Government Middle School Uri in north Kashmir’s Khanpora area of Baramulla district on Thursday.

The School Children were returning back to Uri after participating in India’s independence celebrations that were held at police lines Baramulla.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Inspector General of Police North Kashmir, JP Singh told local news gathering agency CNS that scores of children from Government Middle School Uri attended the Independence Day function that took place at Police lines Baramulla.

“After the function was over, the school children boarded an SRTC bus that came under attack near Khanpora Bridge. Youth resorted to stone pelting and injured three children including the driver of the bus,” Singh said adding that more children would have been injured if the driver had stopped the bus.

DIG North Kashmir said that police have identified the stone pelters and hunt has been launched to trace them.

Meanwhile, parents alleged that police did not bother to provide security cover to their children. “Police took pains to bring them to Barmaulla and left them at the mercy of the God after the function was over,” one of the parents said.
