axena said the tunnel, described as a key infrastructure initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will ensure year-round connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of the country while improving access to remote and border areas.
In a post on social media platform X, the Lt Governor said the breakthrough of the strategically important tunnel marks a major milestone in Ladakh’s development journey and will strengthen road connectivity in high-altitude border regions.
Responding to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, who had also highlighted the breakthrough as a significant step towards all-weather connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Saxena thanked him for his support in advancing critical infrastructure projects in the Union Territory.
He further said improved connectivity would boost tourism, generate employment opportunities and support sustainable development in Ladakh’s difficult terrain.
The Zoji La Tunnel, once completed, is expected to provide uninterrupted connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, especially during harsh winter months when the existing route remains closed due to heavy snowfall.
