The Zoji La Tunnel is truly an engineering marvel, boasting impressive features that will undoubtedly benefit the region. With a revised length of 13.15 km and a total length of 14.15 km, the tunnel will be a horseshoe-shaped, single tube structure with a two-lane road, providing a crucial link between Srinagar and Leh.

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the anticipated time savings for travelers. Currently, crossing the treacherous Zoji La Pass takes a daunting 3-4 hours. However, once the tunnel is operational, this travel time is expected to be reduced significantly to just 15 minutes. Such a drastic improvement will undoubtedly make a significant positive impact on transportation and accessibility for locals and tourists alike.

But the benefits do not end there. Captain Singh emphasized that the completion of the Zoji La Tunnel will facilitate military movement and hold great significance from India’s security perspective. As the tunnel provides a safe and efficient route even during the harsh winter months, it will significantly enhance the military’s logistical capabilities in the region.

Moreover, the project boasts state-of-the-art technology, with a Smart Tunnel (SCADA) system constructed using the new Austrian tunnelling method. This system will incorporate cutting-edge facilities, including CCTV surveillance, radio control, uninterrupted power supply, and proper ventilation, ensuring the utmost safety and convenience for those utilizing the tunnel.

Taking a trip down memory lane, the foundation stone for this ambitious project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2018. Since then, the Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) has been tirelessly executing the project, making steady progress towards its completion.

Upon its realisation, the Zoji La Tunnel will provide a lifeline of all-weather safe connectivity between Srinagar, Dras, Kargil, and Leh regions, transforming the region’s accessibility and bringing prosperity to the area. The tunnel’s strategic location, situated between Srinagar and Leh, makes it an essential link for the movement of the military, solidifying its crucial role in the nation’s security.
