Clashes erupted between police and protesters in Nowhatta area of old city and Baramulla town here after Friday prayers, leaving six persons injured.

As per the reports of a local news agency, GNS, after Friday prayers thousands of youth chanting pro-freedom slogans took to streets at main Chowk Nowhatta in Old City.

Police and CRPF men deployed in the area fired teargas canisters and used batons to disperse the protesting people. The youth responded and started pelting stones.
During the clashes at least five persons sustained pellet gun injuries. The injured have been identified as Peer Showkat son of Ghulam Rasool resident of Kawanpora Nowhatta, Shamima wife of Fida Hussain, resident of Alamgari Bazaar, Syed Mehboob son of Syed Hussain resident of Kalaighar Nowhatta and Sameer Ahmad son of Gulzar Ahmad Khan resident of Hawal.

All the injured were immediately rushed to SMHS for treatment.

Later, the clashes also erupted in other areas of Old City including M R Gung, Saraf Kadal and Kawdara. The stone pelting was going on till late in the evening.

“Police exercised maximum restraint and chased away the stone-pelters which was sporadically going on till reports last came in,” a police official told GNS.

Meanwhile, scores of youth started pelting stones at police team in Baramulla town ensuing clashes between youth and police. However, no one was injured in the clashes.
