SRINAGAR: Eleven Indian crew members were injured on Tuesday after a Panama-flagged commercial vessel was struck by a projectile while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, prompting India to condemn the attack.
The vessel, MT On Peace, had 19 crew members on board, including 17 Indian nationals. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), 12 crew members were injured in the incident, of whom 11 were Indians.
In a statement, the MEA said India condemned the attack on the vessel and described the continuing attacks on shipping in the region as a matter of “deep concern”.
The injured crew members were evacuated with the assistance of Omani authorities and are receiving medical treatment in Khasab, Oman, the ministry said.
India called for an immediate halt to attacks on shipping in the region, stressing the need to protect commercial vessels, seafarers and civilian infrastructure.
The MEA also said navigation and commercial activity through international waterways should be restored at the earliest in the interests of regional peace and stability.
The ministry thanked the Omani authorities for their assistance in evacuating the injured sailors and facilitating their medical treatment.
