SRINAGAR: Since its inception in 2016-17, the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) has sanctioned 3,34,986 houses for Jammu and Kashmir, with 1,28,170 homes completed as of December 2024. This data was provided in a written response to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Rural Development Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani.
In the last five years, Jammu and Kashmir saw progress in housing targets under the scheme. The Union Territory completed 5,016 houses in 2019-20, 21,569 in 2020-21, and 42,515 in 2021-22, with further achievements in subsequent years. During 2023-24 alone, 79,799 houses were completed against the year’s target of 1,38,106.
The total financial assistance provided to the region over the past five years under the scheme stands at Rs 3,253.25 crore, with the highest allocation of Rs 1,234.69 crore in 2023-24.
The PMAY-G aims to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to rural households living in kutcha or dilapidated homes. The beneficiary selection follows a transparent process based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 and is finalised after community-level verifications. The timeline for completing individual houses is set at 12 months, with the overarching goal of 4.95 crore houses nationwide to be completed by March 2029.
