SRINAGAR: Srinagar is grappling with a massive surge in vehicular traffic, with the number of vehicles in the city reaching an estimated four lakh, according to Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari. Of these, approximately 3.75 lakh vehicles ply within the city daily, a number that increases significantly when vehicles from other districts enter the capital.
This surge in traffic has exacerbated congestion and contributed to rising road accidents. Recent incidents, including the tragic death of two young students at Tengpora, have heightened concerns, prompting stricter enforcement measures.
In response to the growing challenges, the RTO, in collaboration with the traffic police, has intensified its efforts to streamline vehicular movement and curb unsafe practices. However, a shortage of manpower remains a significant hurdle.
“We are working hard despite these challenges to address traffic congestion and reduce accidents,” said Syed Shahnawaz. He emphasised the importance of addressing the issue of underage driving, a major concern following the Tengpora incident.
The RTO reiterated that individuals under the age of 18 are not eligible for driving licences, urging parents to ensure their children abide by the law. The influx of vehicles from outside the state, including Delhi, has further compounded the city’s traffic woes, making it imperative for all stakeholders to cooperate in mitigating the crisis.
