SRINAGAR: Police have seized 18 vehicles across Baramulla, Shopian and Ganderbal districts for allegedly being involved in the unauthorised extraction and transportation of minerals, as part of an ongoing enforcement drive against illegal mining.
In Baramulla, Police Post Mirgund seized a tipper bearing registration number JK05B-8719 after it was found carrying allegedly illegally extracted boulders. Separately, Police Post Wussan seized another tipper, JK03L-4402, carrying allegedly illegally extracted soil.
Police said legal action has been initiated against both vehicles under relevant provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
In Shopian, Police Post Berthipora intercepted and seized four dumpers during routine patrolling in the Berthipora area. The vehicles were allegedly involved in the extraction and transportation of minerals without valid royalty documents.
Police Station Keller has registered FIR No. 98/2026 under relevant provisions of law and initiated an investigation.
In Ganderbal, police seized 14 vehicles, comprising 11 tippers and three tractors, for allegedly extracting and transporting minor minerals without valid authorisation. The vehicles were seized on the spot, following which the matter was referred to the concerned Geology and Mining Department.
The department subsequently imposed fines under the applicable provisions of law.
Police said enforcement against unauthorised mining, transportation and trade of minor minerals would continue.
