SRINAGAR: The Geology and Mining department has taken strict action against illegal mining, extraction, and transportation of raw materials in various areas of Bandipora. During raids conducted since last month, a total of 46 vehicles, including JCBs, were seized.

An official stated that these vehicles were found to be involved in illegal activities related to mining and transportation of raw materials. The operations specifically targeted areas such as Gamroo, Lankreshipora, Kulhama, Saderkoot, and other parts of the district.

Under the leadership of District Mineral Officer (DMO) Mumtaz Ahmad, the department has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal mining. Ahmad mentioned that the crackdown on sand and boulder mining is ongoing in different parts of the district. In the month of May alone, fines totaling Rs 7 lakh were imposed for various offenses related to illegal mining. The department conducted raids both during the day and night to apprehend offenders.

In order to prevent further illegal activities, the department disconnected ramps used by trippers to access Arin nallah embankments and load bajri. However, these ramps were rebuilt by offenders overnight. The department plans to collaborate with the Flood Control Department to address this issue.

The DMO of Bandipora highlighted that the entire team is on high alert to monitor illegal mining in the district. He assured that all cases of illegal mining would be promptly dealt with according to the rules, ensuring appropriate actions are taken against the violators through a fast-track system. These efforts by the department aim to curb illegal mining and safeguard the natural resources of the Bandipora district. (KNO)
