At least 7 persons died and one was wounded when Tata Sumo vehicle they were travelling in rolled down a hill and plunged into River Chenab in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Sources told CNS that an ill-fated Sumo (JK06-2656) was on its way from Saroor to Thatri Kishtwar.” At least 7 persons died on the spot while one of the injured was airlifted to Jammu Medical College,” said a police official.

Police said that there were at least 8 persons travelling in the Sumo when near Kulgadi Drabshal, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it rolled down into the River Chenab.

Reports said the people witnessing the tragic accident informed the police and district administration. The rescue team was able to recover an injured Sushil Kumar son of Kuldeep Kumar from the River who was immediately airlifted to JMC for treatment.

A police official identified the deceased  as Driver Rajinder Kumar son of Jagdesh Raj resident of Doka Baroora, Kotwal Chand son of Tara Chand, Dev Raj son of Jamiat Ram, Abdul Kabir Mir son of Abdul Aziz residents of Banwan Kishtwar, Ashiq Hussain son of Muhammad Ishaq resident of Thatri, Kuldeep Kumar son of Munshi Ram and Teerat Ram son of Lakashmir Chand residents of Charasoo Kishtwar.

District administration officials of Kishtwar along with Health Department rushed  to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, NC Patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, PDP Patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, State Congress President Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and Congress leader and MLA Inderwal Ghulam Muhammad Saroori while expressing shock over the loss of human lives conveyed their grief and sympathy to the bereaved families.
