Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) is in news again for all the wrong reasons. With the announcement of CET 2012 results declared on June 30, there is a question mark on the reliability of results.

The aspirants who had appeared for the entrance are shocked, parents have raising finger on the entire process of examination. Candidates have openly challenged the genuineness of the merit list and termed the entire process of selection as mala fide. The allegations appear to carry weight as the list carries names of those aspirants whose performance in class 10th and 12th has remained unsatisfactory.

Reports allege middlemen and touts had put questions papers on sale where the highest bidders benefitted the most. Suspicion grew strong as despite appointing Prof R D Sharma as new chairman the present chairman has been given two months extension. It is alleged that the extension in the term of the present chairman has a serious connection with those who benefitted from the question paper leak racket.

The alleged racket is localized in the South of Kashmir where from comes kingpin as well. Substantiating their claim, the aggrieved candidates alleged that one Mir Hina Saleem D/o Muhammad Saleem Mir resident of Anantnag under roll no. 123388 getting 36th rank passed her class 12 examination with third division and that too in her third attempt. Besides, four candidates from and around a single village of Kanelwan Bijbehara are among the toppers. Rumours are doing the rounds in the village that seats were ‘purchased on payment of hefty sums ranging from 10 to 20 lakhs in each case’.

The topper Mir Wajid Majid who since the day of declaration of result is taking significant space in print and electronic media is also looked upon with suspicion as his sister Mir Danish Majid with 17th rank, his cousin Sadam Farooq from Munghal village of Anantnag ranking 5th is reportedly connected with a network of two more candidates. Hovura Zahoor having 111 rank and Sheikh Bargees Ismail having 36th rank are alleged to have also benefitted from the racket.

Farooq Ahmad Itoo of Dari Gund Bijbehara is alleged to be the actual broker and tout who is instrumental in the purchase and sale of the question papers. Having computer background, Itoo is believed to be close to the present BOPEE chairman.

Not only Itoo, but the alleged mastermind is belived to be Bashir Ahmad Ganai of Anantnag who is rolling in unimaginable riches.

This is not first time, in 2003 also there was a question paper leak in connection with MD entrance test and the BOPEE had cancelled the results after the racket came to light.

The candidates and their families demand impartial probe. Justice apart, the fact remains the sanctity of institution has been badly damaged. If our selection process is corrupt, the outcome – people to serve in future has to be the same.

Lawmakers New Initiative

On the morning of Tuesday, everybody at civil secretariat was taken by surprise with yet another new innovative idea of MLA Langate, Engineer Rashid. He had collected over 100 dogs from his constituency with an aim to unleash them at the Secretariat so that ‘government, which has failed to act against deadly stray dogs, gets a feel of the menace’.

But the plan was foiled at the last moment when the four loaded trucks and Santro car of MLA were stopped by a huge contingency of police from entering into the civil secretariat. The MLA said he didn’t want to unleash canines for the sake of mockery but he wanted government to realize its failure in checking the dog menace. But still he managed to ferry five puppies to the city, three in his Santro JK 02 A 2317 and two in that of his close aide in the dead of dark at around 3 in the morning.

MLA Langate says that the government ensures safety of dogs but doesn’t have vaccines to treat to bite victims. “They (government) has been pleading that dogs cannot be killed. But when army can kill a person for merely being a suspect militant, why not dogs who have endangered the life of humans in Kashmir?” Rashid said adding “I am not against rights of animals but then human life needs to be given top priority”.

Ashique Bukhari, SSP Srinagar says, dogs were handed over to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC). And SMC is going to sterilize them at the Shugama dog pound.

In order to pacify the public anger over Baba Reshi bus tragedy that left three dead and more than 50 people injured, mainly students from a Kupwara school, the government ordered cancellation of the registration of Iqra Public School Khumriyal Lolab.

According to eyewitnesses the 53-seater bus (JKE-6144), which was ferrying students for a picnic lost control while negotiating a sharp curve near the Baba Reshi shrine, 55 km north of Srinagar.

The bus carrying students and staff members of Iqra Public School fell into a gorge near Baba Reshi in North Kashmir. Three people Jehangeer Ahmad Dar (25), a teacher; Owais Manzoor, a Class 5 student; and Akhtar Hussain, the driver were killed on the spot.

Injured were rushed to Srinagar where five, among the 38 grievously injured students, are said to be still critical.

After the news broke out angry protesters blocked the Tangmarg-Baba Reshi road, accusing the local administration of not attending the dilapidated road, which has developed deep crevices and trenches all along the stretch.

Locals who ferried injured in private vehicles blamed the police and medical department of poor services.

In a statement issued by the government, Director School Education, Mohammad Shafi Rather ordered Chief Education Officer Kupwara to withdraw registration of Iqra Public School Khumriyal, Lolab for defying government order issued earlier for not taking school children for picnic without permission of the education department.

“We had issued a circular a month ago prohibiting such picnics wherein the schools do not obtain the prior permissions from their Zonal Educations Officers or Chief educations officers. Similarly we had banned excursions in Pahalgam due to rush of Amarnath Yatra,” Rather said in a statement.

An angry mob, protesting against the poor rescue operation, attacked the Hindustan Times team when they were on their way to reach the accident spot.

Naveed Siraj, a young photographer from Kashmir, presently working in Motivate publishing house in Dubai held a two day exhibition of his work, ‘Romancing Kashmir’ in Comrade Inn, Rajbagh. He displayed about 22 of his clicked pictures in there.

He says he had consciously decided to exhibit only two places of Kashmir, one which is over-exploited and other which is less known. He is planning to exhibit more of his work in coming years but this exhibition displayed only Dal Lake and Gangbal. Gangbal is situated in the hills of Harmukh range, at a height of 12000 feet on the Ganderbal-Sonamarg road.

All the pictures in the exhibition were put on sale and on the very first day of the exhibition most of the pictures were sold. Most of the pictures were purchased either by hoteliers or by the houseboat owners, says Naveed.

“I did this to promote tourism in the place and I am planning to exhibit more clicks of less known places so that they will be thrown open for tourists,” he says.

After couple of years Naveed is planning to publish a coffee table book of these exhibited photos.

Naveed, a Burnhall student, has graduated from Delhi University. He had planned to help his father in business but later decided to go for his hobby, photography.
