A person namely Mushtaq Ahmad Gilkar from Srinagar’s Khanyar locality was reported dead in police custody Saturday. Police claims the deceased was arrested in “drug addiction” case and was lodged in Srinagar’s Central Jail since 2009.

“He was not feeling well and was admitted in a local hospital where he succumbed to his ill health,” the police official from nearby Khanyar Police Station informed Kashmir Life.

But the family of the deceased is not subscribing police version.

“We don’t believe what police is saying,” one of the relatives of deceased told Kashmir Life. “He has been hit on his head by fellow prisoners.” Gilkar was a father of three.

“We have started investigating the case,” the police official said.

The family and relatives of the deceased had put Gilkar’s body in the middle of road at Khanyar and were shouting “Qaatil ko peesh karo.”  Later they dispersed peacefully and took the body home.
