Hundreds of people including school children staged a massive demonstration outside Executive Magistrate Khag in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district Wednesday demanding registration of FIR against the local Army unit which according to protestors is directly responsible for the death of a minor girl Simran Reyaz.

Simran died while her brother lost his legs when an unexploded shell went off on Monday in Drang Khag area.

Protestors including the members of J&K RTI Movement and Tosa Maidan Bachavo Front (TBF) termed the Army version in which they claimed that army has nothing to do with the incident, a blatant lie and said that their statement is an insult on the wounds of the bereaved family and the locals who witnessed the disaster by their own eyes.

MLA Beerwah Dr Muhammad Shafi Wani while taking part in the protest said that a formal FIR should be lodged in this regard so that guilty may be punished. He said that independent inquiry on fast track should be conducted immediately to expose the guilty.

The protestors demanded a search and combing operation should be launched to clear all the littered shells in the area.
Meanwhile, police lodged a formal FIR in this regard and assured the protestors that investigation would be taken up on fast track basis.

Tehsildar Khag Muhammad Shafi said that he along with the police officials visited the spot on Wednesday to ascertain the facts. “We inspected the spot and talked to people there. We will send the pieces of littered shell to Forensic Laboratory and will start investigation once we receive the report,” he said adding that FIR was lodged in this regard today and the police provided the copy of FIR to the protestors who later on dispersed peacefully.

Meanwhile, taking suo moto cognizance of the killing of a minor girl, State Human Rights Commission Wednesday served notices to Director General of Police, J&K, Deputy Commissioner Budgam and concerned Army Unit that carried out military drills in Tosa Maidan.
