Following the arrest of Prof S A R Geelani and JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar in New Delhi post Afzal Guru event, severe clashes broke out between protestors and forces in Nowhatta area of Old Srinagar after Friday congregational prayers today.

The protestors were waving flags expressing solidarity with JNU students, report said.

“Angry youth engaged in fierce stone pelting while forces lobbed tear gas shells to contain the situation,” witnesses said. The youth waived flags reading ‘Thank You JNU’.

Prof Geelani and Kanhaiya Kumar are in jail under sedition charges for their speeches at the two events held in union capital commemorating the death anniversary of Mohammad Afzal Guru on February 09 and 11.

The Kashmiri students studying in New Delhi have started returning home after they alleged that police are raiding their rooms in union capital.

The slapping of sedition charges and arrest of the duo invited severe reaction from across the ideological divide across mainland India.
