SRINAGAR: Nearly 95 percent of the construction work on the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu, has been finished, with plans to open its doors to the public shortly, officials said.

Dr Shakti Gupta, Executive Director of AIIMS Jammu, informed that 42 towers are coming up simultaneously and around 95 percent of construction is complete.

He said the inauguration of this major hospital is expected soon; however, the date of inauguration is to yet be fixed by the PMO.

Officials said a total of 42 major buildings are coming up on 226.84 acres of the land allotted to the hospital on the National Highway-44 and the majority of works have already been completed. They said the required equipment is being procured within and outside the country.

“Around 50 departments including 30 general and 20 super specialities will be made operational and the required staff will be hired even as some junior cadres were being selected by a local committee of the AIIMS Jammu. A Nursing College of AIIMS Jammu is already functional with the admission of 60 candidates for BSc Nursing,” officials said.

AIIMS Jammu is currently offering an MBBS program for a duration of 5 years and 6 months with a total seat intake of 62 that will be taken to 100 once the institute is made operational.

Notably, in November last year, the Centre in the Rajya Sabha said that 92 percent of the civil construction of AIIMS Jammu and 42 percent of AIIMS Awantipora has been completed.

In a written reply to a question Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar had said that 92 percent  of civil construction work of AIIMS Jammu has been completed, while 1450 faculty and non-faculty posts have been sanctioned out of which 549 have been filled up.

The super speciality hospital will have 750 beds, including 46 trauma and emergency beds, 193 ICU beds, 20 operation theatres, a helipad, and a 1,000-seat auditorium besides MRI, CT, and CATH lab equipped with the most modern technology.

The departments include General Medicine, General Surgery, Cardiology, CVTS, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology, Gastroenterol Surgery, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Urology, Nephrology, Pediatric Surgery, Burn and Plastic Surgery, Nuclear Medicine, ENT, Dermatology, Dentistry, Dermatology, CFM, Anaesthesiology, Anatomy, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Pathology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Radiology and Pulmonary Medicine.(KNO)
