Barely 12 hours after he was released on bail, JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Mailk was rearrested from his Maisuma residence by a posse of police Saturday, said the party spokesperson.

Malik was arrested on May 25 from his office and was subsequently imprisoned in Srinagar’s Central Jail. His arrest came on the close heels of his pro-active efforts to strike unity in the pro-freedon camp.

“After getting bail last evening,” JKLF spokesperson told Kashmir Life, “Malik reached his Maisuma home and left to meet his family doctor to treat his chest condition.”

But at around 11pm, the spokesperson said, some men in civvies suddenly climbed the fence of Malik’s residence, triggering panic in the area. “When the locals came out of their residences in protest, they had to face teargas shelling from the already stationed cops on the streets. This forced the locals to house JKLF chief in the safe shelter for the night.”

By Saturday dawn, the spokesperson said, restrictions were imposed in Maisuma. But Malik managed to address a hurriedly-conveyed presser, accusing the administration for the “gundaraj” and curbs placed on pro-freedom groups.

“I will strive for unity among the pro-freedom groups even if I am put in jail for ten years,” Malik said, before being arrested.

Meanwhile, Malik’s arrest triggered clashes in restive Maisuma with youth demanding his immediate release. Already the area is observing spontaneous shutdown against what JKLF spokesperson said “night raids in the area.”
