In the third phase of “Akh Akis” housing initiative, by Dar-ul-Khair Mirwaiz Manzil, involving construction of houses for the worst hit flood victims, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday laid the foundation stone of seven more houses at Batmaloo, Srinagar. The approximate cost of the third phase is around 45 lakh rupees.

Following the recommendation of local Masjid Committee Batmaloo and coordination committee Batmaloo Mirwaiz laid the foundation of houses belonging to Ab Majid Wani Baranpather, Ab Rashid Sheikh Hamzah Colony, Ab Rehman Sheikh Hamzah Colony Dilshada Bano Baranpahter, Bashir Ahmad Bhat New Colony, Ab Gani Khan New Colony and Mehraj din Dar Bonpur.

A statement issued this afternoon said, “during the ceremony number of Imams, Ulema, members of civil society, traders’ organizations, families of flood victims and hundreds of young volunteers were present. The young volunteers pledged to help in the construction work at all stages.”

Addressing the gathering, Mirwaiz said that while the aim of the initiative is to provide houses to the most needy among the flood victims, such initiatives help inculcate in us as a community, a sense of shared responsibility towards  one another, a value greatly exhibited by the people especially the youth during the floods. “Such initiatives reinforce the feeling of brotherhood, oneness and solidarity among the members of the society.”

Castigating the government in failing to provide relief and rehabilitation to the flood hit victims, Mirwaiz said, “the approach of the government towards the floods, should serve as an eye opener and make us realize that we need to get independent of being dependent on them  and strengthen and promote self-help initiatives like Akh Akhis and the like.”

Stressing that Dar-ul-Khair initiative was “completely indigenous, where resources were raised by contributions from Kashmiris both here and abroad”, Mirwaiz thanked the people for their generosity and love for their fellow beings.

Mirwaiz appealed to people to continue to generously donate towards the project so that the initiative is taken forward and the target met.
