SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has said several schools in Anantnag West constituency are functioning from government-owned buildings with adequate accommodation, while the proposed construction of a school building at Sransoo remains held up due to litigation over land acquisition.
The School Education Department provided the details in response to a starred question by MLA Abdul Majid Bhat (Larmi) regarding the availability and construction of school buildings in the constituency.
On the absence of a primary school in Ashajipora, the government said the Government Primary School Ashajipora was merged with Middle School Dabruna in 2015 because of low enrolment. The Dabruna school is located about 100 metres from Ashajipora and is catering to the educational needs of students from the area.
The department said Middle School Bumthan was functioning from its own building, which has five rooms and stands on 1 kanal and 10 marlas of land. The school does not have a boundary wall, for which a proposal has been made under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) programme for 2026-27.
There is no middle school in Sransoo, the government said, adding that Primary School Sransoo is functioning from rented accommodation.
Land measuring 5 kanals and 8 marlas, recorded under survey No. 279/114 in Estate Sransoo, had been identified for construction of a school building. However, the land acquisition process has not been completed because of litigation initiated by local residents.
On the demand for a new modern school building in the Y.K. Pora area, the department said two middle schools — Boys Middle School Y.K. Pora and Girls Middle School Y.K. Pora — were already functioning in the vicinity.
Boys Middle School Y.K. Pora has seven rooms in its own government building and an enrolment of 64 students. It has 2.5 kanals of land and sufficient accommodation, according to the government.
Girls Middle School Y.K. Pora has eight rooms in its government building and 49 students enrolled. The school has two kanals of land and also has sufficient accommodation.
The government said three schools, including a Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), were functioning in Nagres village. All three were housed in government-owned buildings with sufficient accommodation and basic facilities.
On the condition of school buildings in Ruhoo, Ashajipora, Sofigund and Wanpoh, the government said Middle School Ruhoo was operating from a rented Auqaf building comprising eight rooms. The building required minor repairs and the matter had been taken up with the Auqaf authorities by the concerned quarters.
The department reiterated that Primary School Ashajipora had been merged with Middle School Dabruna in 2015 because of low enrolment.
Middle School Sofigund and Middle School Wanpoh, meanwhile, were functioning from their own buildings, although minor repairs to rooftops, doors and windows were required.
