SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is expected to hold its autumn session from September 21, with the Union Territory administration set to complete the formal process for convening the House in the coming weeks.
According to official sources, the proposal to convene the next session was discussed during the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday. The Cabinet is understood to have forwarded its recommendation to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is empowered to formally summon the Assembly.
Sources indicated that September 21 has been proposed as the likely date for the commencement of the session, although the final notification will be issued by the Lieutenant Governor.
The timing of the session is in line with the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which stipulates that no more than six months can elapse between the final sitting of one session and the first sitting of the next.
Section 18(1) of the Act states that the Lieutenant Governor shall summon the Legislative Assembly at such time and place as deemed appropriate, provided the constitutional requirement regarding the six-month interval is observed.
As the previous sitting of the Assembly concluded on April 4, 2026, the next session is required to be convened on or before October 3, 2026 to comply with the statutory mandate.
The last Assembly session, which served as the Budget Session, comprised 22 sittings. It began on February 2 and, after a scheduled recess, resumed on March 27 before being adjourned sine die on April 4, 2026.
