Jammu and Kashmir police on Sunday said that Shopian police and Army, CRPF carried out searches in the Badigam area of Shopian which resulted in an encounter.

The spokesman in a statement said “the holed up militants fired heavily upon the search party. Security forces in their guarded response fired back.”

Meanwhile, police made repeated attempts to make the hiding militants to surrender. In the process, family members and nearby community headmen were also roped in vain to surrender them.

During the encounter, five militants of outlawed HM were neutralized. Their identities are being ascertained.

“One Army personnel and one policeman have sustained injuries during the encounter,” police said.

“Post-encounter incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot,” police added.

The police spokesman said that in the said encounter one civilian was injured in the cross firing has succumbed to his injury at the hospital.
