Imran Raza Ansari, prominent Islamic cleric who happens to be a minister in the PDP-BJP government, Thursday said that the verdict of High Court on banning sale of beef in the state can be challenged in the higher courts owing to the “unjustified” nature of the ban.

“The ban is against the Muslim majority character of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and government should definitely revoke it. The ban (on sale of beef) is unjustified,” Ansari told KNS over phone, insisting that he was speaking in the capacity of a religious person and not as a minister. “We can challenge it in the higher court,” he added.

“Since Maharaja’s time the state of Jammu and Kashmir has never banned beef although the Ranbir Panel Code (RPC) enacted in 1862 by the then Dogra king has provision of the ban,” he said.

He, however, cautioned people not to see every court judgement as a political issue. “We have to first see who are the people who filed the PIL and what are the contents,” he said adding that attributing political motives to the court judgement was not like doing justice with people.
