SRINAGAR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday staged widespread protests across Jammu and Kashmir against National Conference (NC) chief spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq over his alleged remarks about the living conditions of Kashmiris, demanding an apology and his resignation.
The protests were organised over what the BJP has termed the “Yazar (Pajama) Controversy”, with party leaders and workers accusing Sadiq of making derogatory remarks about Kashmiris.
According to the BJP, Sadiq, while speaking about the contribution of NC founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, allegedly said that Kashmiris “did not even have pajamas, with one pajama being shared by an entire neighbourhood”.
The BJP condemned the reported remarks and demanded that Sadiq apologise for what it described as an insult to the dignity of Kashmiris. Party workers also called for his resignation as an MLA.
The protests were held at multiple locations across Jammu and Kashmir, with BJP leaders and workers raising slogans against the NC spokesperson and seeking action over the alleged statement.
The controversy has drawn a political confrontation between the BJP and the ruling National Conference, with the BJP insisting that Sadiq withdraw the alleged remarks and apologise publicly.
