SRINAGAR: The BJP National General Secretary, Tarun Chugh, has called for the resignation of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, citing the government’s failure to address the fundamental needs of its citizens, including frequent and unscheduled power cuts and an acute water crisis.

Chugh, in a strongly-worded statement, accused the National Conference-led administration of neglecting its electoral promises, particularly its pledge to provide 200 units of free electricity. Instead, he said, residents are enduring prolonged power outages and water scarcity, exacerbating their hardships during the harsh winter months.
The situation is particularly dire during Chilai Kalan, the 40-day period starting December 21, known for its extreme cold. Chugh highlighted that Srinagar recently recorded a night temperature of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius, the lowest in over 30 years, leaving residents without essential amenities like electricity and water.
“Electricity during this period is not a luxury but a necessity,” Chugh asserted, adding that the administration’s failure to prioritise these basic needs has plunged the region into severe distress. He criticised the government for its inaction, stating that the water crisis has further compounded the suffering of the people.
Chugh warned that the BJP would organise demonstrations if immediate measures were not taken to resolve these issues. He called on the Omar Abdullah-led administration to act swiftly to restore electricity and water supplies and fulfil its promises.
The BJP leader also referred to recent protests outside Abdullah’s residence, including one led by Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, as a sign of growing discontent with the Chief Minister’s leadership. “This is a clear indication of Omar Abdullah’s failure. He has lost the trust of the people and even his party. He must resign immediately,” Chugh stated.
