Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Monday termed the valiant effort of the elderly boatman of Rajbagh who drowned while saving his three tourists as an instance of Kashmiriyat.

Ms Mufti was speaking to media after offering condolences with the bereaved family of the 60-year-old boatman Ghulam Mohammad Guroo.

Guroo drowned on Wednesday evening while trying to save his tourists after his shikara capsized in Jhelum near Fateh Kadal footbridge. His body was fished out early today at Chattabal Veer.

While terming the deceased boatman as “our hero”, the CM said, “I want to give this message that some media men – not all – who are only showing the militant or other image of the Kashmir must know that is not the real picture of Kashmir.”

The real picture, she stressed, was shown by this man (boatman) by sacrificing his life to save his tourists.

“He has shown what Kashmiriyat is all about. I salute such brave-heart.”

Ms Mehbooba assured the poor family of the deceased boatman’s family all government assistance.
