Last week after finishing the Friday prayers when most of the people left Jamia Masjid, a group of masked boys rushed to the pulpit carrying black flags of Islamic State (IS) in their hands. One of them jumped on the pulpit with his shoes one and began shouting slogans in favour of IS. The incident, which was caught on camera, enraged everyone in Kashmir. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who leads Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid, called the incident an attempt to desecrate the sanctity of the historic mosque. A few days later Mirwaiz, along with his supporters, helped cleanse the mosque. Interestingly, Mirwaiz was seen cleaning the pulpit with Colin instead of traditional rose water.
