KARACHI

Zarina-wife-of-M-Maqbool-Bhat35 years after JKLF co-founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, was hanged in Tihar jail, his wife, Zakira Begum, breathed her last in Pakistan’s commercial capital, Karachi on February 16.  She was 70. Mother of an English Literature professor-daughter, Lubna Bhat, Zakira had been living inside University of Karachi campus with her daughter. Zakira was the second wife of Bhat.

snow-leopardKashmir renewed the international media attention once again. But not for the reasons most of us would expect. Three Australian daredevil skiers ran into a crouching Leopard near the snowy slopes of famed ski resort of Gulmarg. One of the skiers who had strapped a camera to his suit filmed the breathtaking scene of the elusive carnivore rearing its head from the four-feet snow where it had been hiding. In a flash, the leopard leaped and hurtled off into forests, catching the off-piste skiers unawares. The footage went viral on social media and made it to CBC News, Wall Street Journal.

SRINAGAR

Hokersar-Migratory-BirdsIt was a treat to bird lovers when they were invited to volunteer in Asian Water Bird Census 2016 taking place in 21 of 24 wetlands and marshes across Kashmir. Led by the front line staff of Wildlife department, the two dozen volunteers took their requisite kits and mounted boats to skim across the waters. The exercise, coordinated by Wetlands International Netherlands, involved meticulously calculating the average number of wintering waterfowls and establishing the database of avian visitors frequenting our marshes. In process, the volunteers sighted number of rare birds Ferruginous duck, Eurasian Marsh Harrier, Gray Lag geese and Purple Heron to mention a few.

After JNU’s Kanhaiya Kumar’s arrest for a charged speech about Kashmir, Facebook blocked a Bengali musician and former Member of Parliament Kabir Suman’s page for mentioning Afzal Guru’s name in a song giving tribute to Kashmiri-American poet Aga Shahid Ali. Just to mention, of late, Facebook blocked a page of Kashmiri cartoonist Mir Suhail for drawing a cartoon marking third death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

In a first in J&K, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has introduced fresh courses in its curriculum like Diploma in Housekeeping, Front Office and also started evening classes for MSc Mathematics, BE Civil Engineering and BE Electrical
