The ongoing disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh is nearing completion, as confirmed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. A mutual agreement has been reached between India and China to restore ground conditions based on equal security interests, covering key aspects like patrolling rights and grazing access. This breakthrough, achieved through diplomatic and military dialogue, addresses tensions stemming from the 2020 standoff in eastern Ladakh. Progress is visible at critical friction points such as Demchok and Depsang Plains, where disengagement has been nearly completed. Indian and Chinese troops are expected to resume patrolling under pre-2020 arrangements following the verification and dismantling of temporary structures. Goodwill gestures, including a planned exchange of sweets on Diwali, reflect improved relations. In a significant advancement, an airfield in Mudh, Nyoma, close to the LAC, is under construction at an altitude of 13700 feet, providing strategic support for military operations. Ninety-five per cent of the runway is ready for emergency landings, and the airfield is projected to be fully operational next year. Prime Minister Modi’s recent dialogue with President Xi Jinping underscores both nations’ commitment to peace and regional stability, with constructive handling of disagreements stressed. Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong reiterated hopes for smooth progression in ties. With infrastructure and diplomatic strategies aligned, India and China appear poised to reinforce stability along the LAC.

SRINAGAR

The Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) has released the results for the Combined Competitive Examinations (CCE) 2023. Sanjeev Kumar secured the highest score, followed by Iqra Farooq and Vasudha Sharma. A total of 71 candidates have been selected for a medical examination, marking the final stage of the recruitment process for Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) roles. The selection process started in April 2023 with the JKPSC receiving 30,756 applications for 75 posts. Out of these, 18,882 appeared for the Preliminary Examination, and 2,144 advanced to the Mains, which took place in early 2024. The interview stage involved 274 candidates, with final results announced for 266 after some absences.

Approximately 60 per cent of the selected candidates belong to reserved categories, with only 29 out of 71 selected through open merit. This has prompted discussions on the reservation policy, with figures like PDP leader Waheed ur Rehman Parra criticising the system as “unjust” and advocating for proportional representation. Among the top candidates, Iqra Farooq from Zakura, Srinagar, ranked second overall and first in the Kashmir region. Despite financial challenges, Iqra achieved her success through independent study, reflecting her dedication to making a positive impact in Kashmir. Her story highlights the potential for self-driven success, even in challenging circumstances. Another successful candidate, Anqa Bint e Irshad, ranked 33, achieved this feat on her first attempt, inspiring others with her commitment to serving society.

The announcement has also raised demographic concerns, as only 21 per cent of selected candidates are from Kashmir, despite Kashmiris comprising a significant portion of Jammu and Kashmir’s population. Of the 71 selected, 33 are Muslims and one is from the Kashmiri Pandit community, sparking further calls for policy reconsideration. Of the 42 who qualified under reservation norms, 20 are Muslims. Seven reserved category candidates have cleared the exam in the Open Merit category thus pushing the non-reserved people out of the race.
