and urging residents of Shopain to call off their strike.  A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Barin Ghosh and Justice Mohammed Yaqub Mir, after studying the report of Special Investigation Team (SIT) directed it to arrest the police officials accused of destroying the evidence in the Shopain double rape and murder case.
“People of the state are behind you and so is the High court. It will be our collective effort to ultimately solve the crime and appropriately deal with the perpetrator(s) of the heinous crime of rape and murder, in accordance with law”, the chief justice said appealing the residents.
He also appealed people of Shopian and the victim’s families to do whatever was within their capacity to help in investigation so that the court reaches a conclusion at an early date.
The court order and appeal to people helped reopen the town after one and a half month of shutdown.
The court also called for the DNA test of the accused officers, “We feel that arrest of those officers followed by collection of their blood samples for the purpose of preparation of their DNA profile in order to match it with the DNA profile of the vaginal semen of the deceased women would expedite the investigation.”
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Barin Ghosh also heard a petition filed by Syed Ali Geelani. Pleading the case on behalf of Geelani, Advocate Nisar Ahmad informed the court that Geelani was not released even after the bail orders issued by the lower court and continues to remain under detention.
Chief Justice directed Geelani’s counsel to furnish a supplementary affidavit regarding the FIRs filed against Geelani, after the bail order was issued in his favour, within two weeks time.
