SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday distributed appointment letters to 132 newly recruited Junior Engineers (Civil) of the Public Works (Roads and Buildings) Department at a function held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), Srinagar.
The Chief Minister said the appointments marked a significant milestone in the lives of the recruits and urged them to treat their roles as a responsibility towards the people of Jammu and Kashmir rather than merely government employment. He stressed the importance of honesty, integrity and professional commitment in public service.
Omar Abdullah said public resources must be used responsibly and efficiently, noting that every rupee spent by the government belongs to the people. He emphasised that infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and hospitals should be durable and of high quality, capable of serving future generations.
He further said that engineers would play a key role in shaping the region’s development over the coming decades and encouraged them to uphold ethical standards, accountability and a sense of public duty throughout their careers. The Chief Minister also advised the appointees to serve in all areas, including remote and underserved regions, and to avoid seeking immediate transfers.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary also addressed the gathering, congratulating the appointees and highlighting their responsibilities in project planning, execution, quality control and supervision. He urged them to maintain transparency and ensure timely completion of developmental works without compromising on standards.
Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani described the appointment as a recognition of merit, stating that engineers form the backbone of development and nation-building.
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Engineer-in-Chief (Secretary Technical), Public Works Department Purshotam Kumar also spoke on the occasion, highlighting the role of engineers in strengthening infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir. Senior officials of the department, the newly appointed engineers and their families attended the function.
