SRINAGAR: The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam, on Monday announced that the month of Muharram-ul-Haram will commence in the Union Territory on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, following the non-sighting of the crescent moon.

He said the decision was taken after no credible reports of moon sighting were received from any part of Jammu and Kashmir.
“As no credible moon sighting reports were received from any part of the Union Territory, the 1st of Muharram-ul-Haram will be observed on Wednesday, June 17, 2026,” the Grand Mufti stated.
The announcement marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, an important period in the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide.
Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam extended his greetings to the Muslim Ummah on the occasion, praying for peace, prosperity, harmony, and the overall well-being of the people.
