Jammu Division Records 598 FIRs, 701 Arrests in 100-Day Nasha Mukt Abhiyan Drive

   

SRINAGAR: A total of 598 FIRs have been registered against drug peddlers across Jammu Division under the ongoing 100-day “Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan”, with 701 arrests made so far as authorities intensify enforcement, surveillance, and rehabilitation measures, officials said on Monday.

The update was shared during a high-level review meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar and Inspector General of Police Jammu Zone Bhim Sen Tuti, which assessed the two-month progress of the anti-drug campaign.

Officials informed the meeting that enforcement agencies have identified 155 drug hotspots and launched coordinated action across districts. Alongside the 598 FIRs, 24 preventive detention orders under PIT-NDPS have been issued against drug smugglers.

Substantial narcotics recoveries were reported, including over 14 kg heroin, 49 kg ganja, 3.712 kg charas, and 204.5 kg poppy straw. Authorities also destroyed illicit cultivation and drug-related material comprising poppy spread across 52 marlas, 44 kanals of wild cannabis, 22,150 units of lahan, and 476 litres of illicit liquor.

In parallel action against the drug economy, 62 immovable properties worth Rs 19.30 crore were demolished, while 21 properties valued at Rs 24.868 crore were seized or attached. Movable assets worth Rs 1.69 crore were also attached. In addition, 180 passports were recommended for suspension, 101 driving licences suspended, 81 cancelled, and 243 vehicle registration certificates suspended along with 94 cancellations across Jammu Division.

The meeting was told that large-scale awareness programmes have significantly expanded the campaign’s outreach, with 1,32,232 tehsil-level, 1,69,026 panchayat-level and 38,03,405 village-level sessions conducted over the past two months. Officials described the initiative as evolving into a mass public movement with participation from multiple sections of society.

To strengthen community engagement, 4,779 Panchayat Mahila Samitis were formed and 947 youth clubs activated. Authorities said these efforts, along with religious and community participation, have generated hundreds of counselling and assistance calls from affected individuals.

On the rehabilitation front, officials said 884 youth were identified for de-addiction support out of 2,293 drug users, with 547 already rehabilitated and 254 linked to self-employment schemes.

Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar directed departments to expand rehabilitation infrastructure, strengthen counselling systems, and ensure continuous follow-up of recovered individuals. He also emphasised providing sports kits to children and youth as a preventive strategy against substance abuse.

He further instructed Deputy Commissioners to adopt data-driven monitoring of drug hotspots and remain alert to shifting or emerging areas of concern. Regular publicity of helpline and tele-assistance numbers was also directed.

Ramesh Kumar called for strict inspections of drug stores and chemist shops in coordination with the Drug Controller, warning against illegal sale of regulated medicines. He stressed that awareness campaigns must focus on behavioural change through sustained engagement with parents, teachers, and students for early detection of addiction signs.

Inspector General of Police Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti said “substantial progress” has been achieved under the campaign but called for further intensification of anti-drug operations. He directed district administrations to ensure regular NCORD meetings and strengthen inter-agency coordination.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners and SSPs of Jammu Division, Excise Commissioner JK, Director Social Welfare, SSP ANTF JK, Director Colleges JK, Drug Controller JK, Joint Director Information Jammu, and senior officers from the Transport, Education, Rural Development departments and Jammu University.
