With the worst ever poll debacle witnessed by Kashmir’s oldest political party National Conference in the recently held elections for Lok Sabha, the state Congress is planning to contest the forth coming assembly elections alone in the state.

Sources within the Congress party said that the party leadership is under tremendous pressure that the forth coming polls for the assembly must be contested alone and that no alliance with national conference be forged.

However, on record, most of the senior Congress leadership remained tight lipped over the issue- stating that the decision to fight the assembly elections alone is yet to be taken. The state Congress also remarked that it is within the ambit of the party high command to take the final call over the issue and that no progress over the same has been reported so far.

“Those who are saying that the party should contest assembly elections alone are giving their personal opinions and the party has not taken any final decision so far,” said state vice president of the Congress party Ghulam Nabi Monga, adding that the decision will be taken by the party leadership at the due course of time.

“Nothing can be said or presumed yet. Right now we are in alliance with the NC and whther we should fight the elections alone or not has not been decided yet.”

Sources also maintained that during the detailed meet of the Congress leadership that was held at a local hotel here on May 23 , emphasized that the party has to go for the threadbare discussions and deliberations before making any move public. The senior Congress leadership also has maintained that people friendly measures are to be taken to ensure better performance in the forthcoming assembly polls.
